TP Bennett was the winner of this year’s RTPI London annual five-a-side football tournament sponsored by Indigo Planning, holding off a determined Newham Hot Spurs 1-0 in the final on Friday night.
Group A was one of the most hotly contested pools of the night with both NLP Planning and Southwark ending the group stages tied on nine points and Camden and CGMessi a close third and fourth on six points. A 6-2 win over Town and Country United and a 4-0 victory over CGMessi helped NLP Planning finish top on goal difference and they progressed through to the quarter-finals along with Southwark and Camden.
A 7-0 defeat of Aitch Group and an 8-3 win over The Wandy Warriors helped Newham finish top of Group B after they finished the group stages level pegging on 10 points with Inter Plan but with a better goal difference. Aitch Group and Inter Plan joined Newham in the quarter-finals.
Competing in Group C were the defending champions Indigo Planning, who like Spain before them, didn’t get off to the most auspicious of starts with a 4-1 defeat to TP Bennett. In fact the night got worse, with only a 3-1 win against Tower of Power to their credit by the end of the group stages. Ciltic FC finished top of the group after winning three of their four group matches and were joined by Wildstone Wanderers and TP Bennett in the quarters.
Wins in the quarter-finals for TP Bennett, Inter Plan, Newham Hot Spurs and Wildstone Wanderers put them through to the semi-finals of the main competition while defeat for CGMessi and Town and Country Planning put them out of the competition for the Plate. It was a hotly contested match for the final place in the Plate quarter-finals as Indigo Planning beat LITP 7-6 on penalties, including stunning penalties from the ladies on both sides.
The semi-finals were a one-sided affair with both TP Bennett and Newham Hot Spurs going through 4-1 against Inter Plan and Wildstone Warriors respectively. This was Newham’s second final in successive years. While in the plate semi-final Aitch Group beat CGMessi and Tower of Power knocked out the reigning champions to move on to the final.
So, now it was on to the big event, the final – almost as tense as the World Cup final and with just as many goals. Newham were the Dutch side of the tournament and unfortunately for them went on to lose again as TP Bennett scored the only goal to make them RTPI London 5-a-side champions 2014 and collect the silverware (well, rather nice trophies in the shape of a footballer). Over in the Plate competition Aitch Group ran out 3-1 winners over Tower of Power to collect their own silver footballers and a rather smaller cup than the Champions.
The trophies were presented by Simon Neate, Chairman of Indigo Planning, who thanked the organisers , players and spectators for attending and taking part in the event.
A great evening was had by all, especially by the spectators (or hecklers depending on your point of view) and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
