After a long process of consulting stakeholders, past judges and potential entrants, we now have a refreshed RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence for 2012-13. This has a smaller number of categories for projects and updated criteria (please find attached), aimed at attracting entries that demonstrate the positive impact of planning. The Board has been very clear that we had to develop a more cost-effective model for our Awards programme, which made better use of the RTPI’s resources and with a fuller written entry, streamlined judging process and a reception-style Awards presentation, we think we have achieved that.
The Awards will also compliment the theme of our new President, Peter Geraghty, who has chosen the theme “Proud of planning, proud of planners”. Peter is asking that we all do as much as possible to promote the Awards and encourage as many entrants as possible. We would greatly appreciate your help in this.
We are asking entrants to make their submission one document, of a maximum 12 pages (24 sides) of A3, which should give the judges fuller information on the projects while avoiding having to deal with excessive amounts of supporting material. Soft copies of entries from your Region will be available to you immediately after the closing date of 15 February 2013 and if you would like to nominate a person to receive these entries, we will send them out automatically without you having to request them. This year, Regions who decided to hold their own Awards scheme called for entries locally; in some areas this was very successful, in others it was more challenging. In 2013, entries from the national scheme will be available to you and Regions can of course decide to supplement these with a local call wherever that would be useful. As in 2012, Regions are not tied to using the same categories and criteria used in the national Awards for Planning Excellence.
Awards entry details will be open until 15 February 2013. The judges will consider all the entries, announce the shortlist around Easter and where appropriate visit the sites in April and May. An Awards presentation will be held in summer 2013, possibly linked to the RTPI Planning Convention, and this will be an evening drinks reception. All Awards entrants will be invited to book places, which will be at a considerably lower cost than in previous year.
We will also be running the Young Planner of the Year Award, Planning Consultancy of the Year and Small Planning Consultancy of the Year, with no change to the entry process and criteria used last year.
