Having entered a team last year (one of the many Plannerthinaikos’!) and crashing out in the group stages we entered this year’s tournament with a certain amount of caution and low expectations. However, new team members and a new name (RailMadrid) resulted in a little more optimism on our prospects. Though, that didn’t stop us from booking a taxi for 20.30 so that we could go straight out after being knocked out in the group stages again!
After our first three wins it was clear that we would have to cancel our taxi, which had a mixed reception from the team – particularly from those who were more interested in the night out than the tournament! We fortunately managed to avoid any squad unrest and managed to reach a compromise by indulging in beers between the subsequent games. Bizarrely this seemed to improve our game rather than hinder it!
In the knock-out stages we came up against Quod Planning, who we played in the group stages, and we fortunately managed to beat them again but it was certainly more difficult the second time.
We then played Westminster in the semi-final. By this time it was clear that our squad was tired (possible a directly result of the third pint?!) and Westminsterwere a very good side. Fortunately we managed to score some great goals and the encouragement from our extremely vocal supporters managed to spur us on to a great win. We were obviously happy with the win, but also slightly concerned about subsequently gaining prompt consents for all our applications that Westminsterare currently considering..!
A little surprised from our semi-final win we then faced DP9 in the final. Again, it was clear that they were a good side but fortunately we managed to score two great early goals to go 2-0 up. DP9 then put us under pressure and managed to get a goal back. Pressure continued in the final few minutes, but thanks to some great defending, fantastic support from the sidelines and a little luck, we managed to hold on for the victory.
We had a great night and thoroughly enjoyed the whole tournament. We would like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped organise the night and to all the teams that took part. We are look forward to next year!
