RTPI London Conference delegates preview Westfield Stratford City

RTPI London Conference delegates don their hard hats for a tour of Westfield Stratford City, due to open in September.

With just 6 weeks until opening, delegates at the 2011 RTPI London Planning Conference were able to tour the nearly-completed construction site of Westfield Stratford City, led by Jon Watson, Development Executive at Westfield. The tour witnessed hundreds of shop-fitters and construction workers putting the finishing touches to the new retail hub of Stratford and the Olympic Park, anchored by a new Marks and Spencer (with an extended Stratford station beneath) and John Lewis / Waitrose (the first joint store of its kind). The huge scale of the retail-led regeneration project was demonstrated, with nearly 200,000 square metres of new retail floorspace, a casino, two hotels and the largest cinema in the country (14 screens). The tour also included views of the nearby Athletes’ Village, Aquatics Centre and the Olympic Stadium for which the new Westfield store provides a key gateway and pedestrian link from Stratford station. Westfield Stratford City opens on Tuesday 13th September 2011.
